Frequently Asked Questions
Can you build a sauna at home?
Yes. A small room next to the bathroom, in the basement or in the garden can become a sauna. You need an insulated wooden cabin, a heater of the right power, ventilation and a dedicated electrical circuit for the heater.
What wood is used in a sauna?
In the Finnish tradition, spruce is used for walls and ceilings and aspen for benches; aspen stays comfortable to touch in the heat and does not splinter. Alder is another common choice for walls and benches; cedar is also used.
How hot does a sauna get?
A traditional Finnish sauna usually runs between 70 and 110 °C. Throwing water on the stones briefly raises the humidity.
What heater does a home sauna use, and how many kW?
The most common choice at home is an electric sauna heater with stones; wood-burning stoves and infrared panels are also used. A rough rule is about 1 kW per 1.3–1.4 m³ of volume in a well-insulated cabin; add 10–30% if there is a glass door, windows or exterior walls.
How long does a sauna take to heat up?
With a correctly sized electric heater, a well-insulated home sauna usually reaches bathing temperature in 30–45 minutes. An undersized heater or poor insulation makes it take longer.
What determines the cost of a sauna?
Cabin size, wood type, heater type and power, use of glass, lighting, control panel, and electrical and ventilation work. An exact figure comes once size and materials are chosen.
